How To Graciously Get Rid Of The Hand-Me-Down Christmas Gift Without Upsetting The Giver.
Hand-me-down gifts are not necessarily gifts that are used. They could be brand new or purchased some time ago, but still in the box. I remember once I got a purse that, when I finally got the nerve to go and change, the store manager told me that the model was discontinued 5 years previously; furthermore, the purse was a good quality, brand new purse, it just looked like it has just crawled out of under a rock. The problem with hand-me-down gifts is that if you do not wear them, you will hurt the feelings of the giver and their surrounding friends.
How to deal with that and still get rid of the annoying gift? Naturally, you can always resort to the ever-popular excuse “it broke”, but it will pave the way for “give it to me, and I will have it fixed”. What you need is a glamorous way to get out of it. This exit is given to you by life itself, when the person that gave you the hand-me-down gift asks what you did with it (because for some unexplained reason they always do), simply smile softly and said that a collector offered to buy it. This (non-existent) person collects that particular brand, type or form of thing that you received. In addition, they asked you to sell it to them, since the item was an heirloom. You could not say “no”.
Keep smiling and change subject as firmly as possible. Do not go into small details and state that you simply do not have their number. Done!
